Tarzan the Terrible, first published in 1921, is considered by devotees one of the best of Burroughs' tales of the ape-man. Set during the First World War, the eighth adventure begins with Tarzan frantically looking for his wife Jane, who has been taken captive by German soldiers. His search brings him to the strangest land he has yet encountered, where dinosaurs of bygone ages coexist with strange human-like tribes. Finding that he is now a captive as well, Tarzan must find a way to survive and be reunited with the woman he loves. The usual mix of thrills and high adventure for which Burroughs' writing is known, are present in satisfying and liberal quantities. First brought to life by Burroughs in 1912, the enduring popularity of Tarzan in radio, television and film gives all the more reason to have a look at the original tales.
