Abandoned Breaths What happens to the words that never escape the confines of heartbroken souls? When someone chooses to vacate your life, they seldom take everything with them when they leave. Closure is elusive. A heart still has questions. It is ruthless in its inquisition and stores every one of them in your soul. Conversations. Statements. Declarations. Endless dial Abandoned Breaths What happens to the words that never escape the confines of heartbroken souls? When someone chooses to vacate your life, they seldom take everything with them when they leave. Closure is elusive. A heart still has questions. It is ruthless in its inquisition and stores every one of them in your soul. Conversations. Statements. Declarations. Endless dialogue. Wordplay. Rebuttals. Pleas. Questions. Resignation. Where do the words go? The ones we wanted to say, but never got the chance? They live on. They don't leave with their Muse. They stay behind. Abandoned. Clinging, building, breathing, and aching to be heard. Abandoned breaths longing to breathe. I feel them emerging, and for once I do not stop them. I let them flow. ________________________________________________________ Abandoned Breaths is the debut poetic collection from Alfa. Between these pages she has gathered the warehouses of the unsaid, and weaved together the voices that have remained silent in our heartbroken hotels. All the abandoned breaths that we hold on to after serving time in heart warfare never really go away. They cling to dusty shelves, tucked into darken chambers among past wreckage; longing to be given life. She has cleaned house and opened musty windows, letting pulsing words breathe and transform into poetic release. The focus of these writings is to give the heart and soul permission to ache after love and loss. The author is unapologetic about her realistic take on heartache and grieving. She touches on the past, trying to make sense of her experiences, to move forward. This book is filled with timeless and vintage feeling poetry. It will touch every individual heart that reads it, no matter the age group.

I like things that are a bit different, I want different things now, this was different in a way that it wasn't, really. This book of undead poems wasn't great by any consideration, obviously this writing exercise was cathartic for the author, clearly. This won't heal you but the words within are comforting. This book of undead poems wasn't great by any consideration, obviously this writing exercise was cathartic for the author, clearly. This won't heal you but the words within are comforting. Some of the advice on letting go and getting better at loving yourself didn't irritate me, so there's that. In the end, getting consoled by words or something warm is the most you can for hope for in this world of whorl. The content here isn't exactly poems, more like prose written entries that kinda reminded me of the Crank series but Crank books are more eloquent. Some of the entries were really good leaving me breathless, where I had to stop reading and just nod like, yeah ok that's good. But most of them were bland, to be frank. You know what, I certainly wasn't expecting nearly all of them to be about lovelorness. Majority of them were about just that. While, that serves a purpose, to be sure, just how receptive you are to that kinda insight depends on where you are in life. The place I am in right now is not the place I want to be, because where I want to be is not a place at all, but time. There are certain timelines I must revisit. This is not some sad nostalgia, this is not me reminiscing really, just coldness of this fact. I guess, where I am standing there is only one person I want to like, someone I have known most of my life, but not enough, not nearly enough, and it ain't a girl. I am talking about myself :P if that wasn't obvious, haha. But what exactly does abandoned breaths mean? So says the guy who wrote a poem called A Posthumous Breath. Alfa. I do however have hard time trusting people who only use their first name, like McG ; horrible director, I definitely mistrust him, and yes not the same thing, hehe. Abandoned Breaths by Alfa is worth a read. How can it not be? Any book that starts with the word SQUALL can't be all bad, and it wasn't. I just need to stop expecting every book of poems to be like Ariel, it's not healthy and it's unfair to other poets. It's just that Sylvia Plath's and Rana Kelly's poetry blows me away. Another thing, the title of every passage was at the footer instead of the header of the page. When things are inverted like that, I like it. See, different. That was cute. Here are the reviews of Ariel and What we Buried, just because and because this was no What We Buried : https://www.goodreads.com/review/show... https://www.goodreads.com/review/show... Dec 2015 : Ariel May 2016 : What We Buried July 2017 : Abandoned Breaths US I love poetic prose, end of. That's the end of that story.

Alfa writes "I used to be embarrassed of my broken parts. Not anymore..even in pieces I am worth having." And these are the beautiful truths Alfa writes so eloquently throughout her book. She takes a hold of every piece of your soul with raw emotion and feeling as if she is writing your own thoughts. Exquisite words, wonderfully relatable to the reader. A must read. Whew. Alfa. I've followed Alfa for some time on various social media sites, and her touching poetry and anecdotes always pause my rapid scrolling. It's a blessing to have her work gathered in "Abandoned Breaths" her debut collection of poetry, quotes, and prose. Alfa is noted for her romantic discourses on love, love lost, empowerment, and self-discovery, and any person with a thread of sensitivity in them and anyone that's experienced the turmoil and bounty of love will find numerous pieces in "Abandoned Breaths" that resonate loudly and clearly. I don't know how many of these poems I shared with my wife, but I can say that it was a lot. And every time she echoed my own reactions, that these poems were written for us and our lives. What power that is for a poet! What power it is to hold words up to a reader so that they can see their own soul and their own story reflected back at them. If you've been meaning to set foot into the world of contemporary poetry, do yourself and your heart a favor, and start here. Bravo, Alfa.

Alfa repeatedly steals my breath with her words. This book is no different. In this expanded version of her first best selling poetry book, Alfa leaves no emotional stone unturned. The cover is not the only striking thing about this book. There were several, several times that I put this book up against my chest to take a breath and try and hold back tears. Alfa is full of tender ferocity and this book is full of absolute wisdom, incredible imagery, and true, deep feeling.

I have followed Alfa's writing since I first came across it. She writes from great depths, those that all great writers and poets pull from. I honestly could not wait for this long anticipated release. Once I ordered and it arrived I read it immediately. Alfa never disappoints with her heartfelt, thought provoking words, of love and loss but more importantly, her words of hope and understanding. Before I begin my review, I’d like to preface it by saying that I’ve read a lot of poetry books lately. I write myself, and I belong to the online poetry community. I’ve followed Alfa on social media for awhile before picking up her book. Her poetry pieces always grab my eye and most times, my heart too. With Abandoned Breaths, I was immediately drawn to the cover. It is gorgeous and ethereal and the colors made sense. There are no detours into the outside world, only the story of her heart and glimpses into what makes it beat. The book is broken down into four sections that show her transition through phases of life, each one a tug-of-war between leaving and learning, between heartbreak and a love for the ages. In Squall, I fell in love with Fairytale, because every beat of my heart often asks to go home. In Prideful, she perfectly describes how it feels to compete with ego and pride, and it took me back to a relationship that I now call a lesson. Monsoon looks closer at the depths within. In Cleansing, Alfa reminds us that tears are necessary. We aren’t weak because we are caring. We should never be ashamed of feeling. In for the long haul gripped my heart, because I’ve been there, and I she described the feeling perfectly, the way we stay even when we shouldn’t because we can’t stand the thought of leaving someone alone. In Zephyr, I found the poem that she clearly wrote for me, knowing I needed to hear it. Fire dove into my very soul and gave it the shake it so clearly needed. I refer back to it every time I start doubting that I deserve happiness. This section also includes the title piece, Abandoned Words, perhaps my favorite in the book. Before I started writing for therapy, I buried my words for so long. I still need to be reminded that all my words need to be said. I also loved Letting Go and Screaming. The book closes out with Exhalation, which is perfect name for the section. Little reminders of how to breathe, and how to survive, pop up throughout, like in Submerged and New Beginnings. Both poems are little lessons on picking up the pieces and refusing to drown. If you want modern poetry that is raw and real, you’ll find it here. Alfa will touch your heart and take it on a journey of love and loss and longing. And, in my opinion, that is what makes an amazing poetry book. I look forward to reading more from this beautiful soul. 5 stars

It's like Alfa's seen into my soul..... I bought the paperback last week but haven't received it yet and I just couldn't wait any longer so I bought the Kindle version today. I don't regret that decision for a nanosecond. Alfa's poetry is raw and real and it's like she reached right inside my heart and mind and soul and put all my pain to ink in ways I could never do. This book reached out and tugged at my heart from the very first poem. Anyone who desires to be moved and to travel on a journey through all of life’s experiences and emotions should take the time to discover the treasures within its pages. Among the numerous favorites, I especially enjoyed Nocturnal, They were in indelible ink, Garden of Eden, and Latching. I look forward to reading the rest of Alfa’s books. They are definitely like water to my soul.

It's a great read as Alfa does not waste time trying to build up to things, she rather takes you through them while walking besides you. Most of it can be categorized into romance and interpersonal relationships as well as self discovery and healing. I really like how personal this work seemed to be. Some lines are just so simple and profound that it really makes you stop and think. A few examples that really got through to me - "Thinking we have ample time to share the words our souls have hidden." "Betrayal… is the emptiness you feel, when you analyze the gaps that your heart stumbles over. " "The line between love and hate is never as faint as when someone chooses to leave you. ~Miniscule " "I have never been jealous of an emotion before… but he holds on to his pride with more ferocity than he ever held on to me. " As a fellow poet who posted her work online, it was such a learning experience as Alfa so dedicated to her art kept on making her voice heard. It was inspiring. I'm a big fan of her as a person. And her book just stands true to who she is. 💖

And something else caught my interest, and that is the acknowledgement of the book where the poet dedicates her book “To Jesus”... for me, This renders the book more authentic; it shows how the reader is true to her readers because she is true to herself and her values!

I like that this is written with passion and without holding back, but I think I am just over this narrative. It’s one I’ve done myself too many times, and it feels boring when it is done without any context. Maybe if you told me about what things this person did to be so toxic, I could feel more for these words. It’s just hard to be passionately angry about a toxic person when I don’t know what made them toxic.

The majority of this book was mediocre - worth maybe two stars. However, there were a handful of pretty remarkable quotes in here, so let’s just go with three. Quick, easy read but barely worth the time. (Especially because it’s loaded full of grammar errors; the then/than mixups had me cringing throughout the whole book.)

Alfa Holden is a poet in the truest sense of the word. She knows how to show her vulnerability and strength in such a way that you are able to see your own. Abandoned Breaths is one book that I go back to time and again because Alfa's words are like a comforting blanket that I can wrap around my shoulders when the world outside seems too cold. this was a beautiful and inspiring collection of poems, and a perfect start for someone who wants to delve deeper into modern poetry. i often found myself feeling more empowered after reading these poems, and wanting to write some myself. although a lot of these had a common theme, you could tell they meant something to the poet, and that's what matters. this was a beautiful and inspiring collection of poems, and a perfect start for someone who wants to delve deeper into modern poetry. i often found myself feeling more empowered after reading these poems, and wanting to write some myself. although a lot of these had a common theme, you could tell they meant something to the poet, and that's what matters.
