A Wonderful Book! Remember the days when little children were cute and adorable and not mean and snotty? Sadly, I don’t either. But, seriously, you’ll love the little girl in this book. Ashley lives with her mother in a rundown apartment with no friends and just plain helter skelter. Her mother has a mental disorder, so her life is filled with paranoia and poor Ashley has to suffer the consequences. Just how much it affects her depends on the adults in her environment. Good luck to all.

Ashley is a little girl who has trouble connecting with her peers and adults. Try as she might, she cannot concentrate on what is going on around her, because she hears sounds in her head and sees people and visions that others cannot. Her mother has similar problems, and is strongly paranoid and religiously fanatic. Ashley also faces problems such as abuse, malnutrition and lack of a loving figure in her life. Things go from bad to worse. Ashley's mother and their priest are convinced that a Sa Ashley is a little girl who has trouble connecting with her peers and adults. Things go from bad to worse. Ashley's mother and their priest are convinced that a Satanic cult has influenced Ashley and infected her with a demon. Clearly, both Ashley and her mother have mental problems that cannot be cured by religion. Ashley is a smart girl, and is desperate for help from a reliable adult who will not manipulate her or punish her for being different. My heart went out to this strong and resilient little girl who has to fight for herself in a very confusing world. Fortunately, there are people on her side. This is a strongly emotional and, at times, frustrating and tense story of a child who just wants to be accepted. It is also a very rewarding and compassionate read that captivated me from the first page. Elizabeth Bedlam has her own relatable style of writing that captures the reader right away. I would just love to meet Ashley and be her friend.

This was such a great read but also a very emotional one. It centres around an 8 year old little girl called Ashley, who lives in a rundown apartment, and who gets physically and mentally abused by her religion obsessed, young, single mother, who thinks that a demon is living inside her daughter. Obviously her mother has some mental health issues, and seeks the help of a doctor/priest in ridding the so called ‘demon’, from Ashley. This is a disturbing story and is deeply emotional as Ashley is a little girl, who has words put into her mouth by her mother and the doctor/priest, who are obsessed with satanic cults and devil worshipping, and Ashley will say anything to make them happy. This sad little girl, just wants someone to love her, and to understand why she has voices in her head, etc. This is a rollercoaster of a ride, and will have your heart breaking!!

This little girl reminded me too much of someone I used to know. It kind of disturbed me. I woke up a couple of nights due to old memories resurfacing. But damn, that’s a sign of a good story, isn’t it?

‘Dark, deep and somewhat disturbing, but also utterly brilliant.’ This is the sad story of Ashley’s pre-teen upbringing , a young girl with mental health problems who suffers constantly from voices and visions which are beginning to cripple her life. Living and being constantly abused by her dysfunctional, neglectful and totally deranged single mother who can see only demons in Ashley, matters are not helped when this fanatically religious pseudo-carer seeks assistance from the local church which ‘Dark, deep and somewhat disturbing, but also utterly brilliant.’ This is the sad story of Ashley’s pre-teen upbringing , a young girl with mental health problems who suffers constantly from voices and visions which are beginning to cripple her life. Living and being constantly abused by her dysfunctional, neglectful and totally deranged single mother who can see only demons in Ashley, matters are not helped when this fanatically religious pseudo-carer seeks assistance from the local church which is steered by a doctor- priest who is obsessed by exposing a supposed satanic cult operating within Ashley’s school. Things are really tough for Ashley who also has to endure random molestations from their landlord and close neighbour Mr Zeiss, but then, she does have Lucifer constantly lurking in the shadows - a seemingly good Angel who will help, guide and protect her through the ups and downs that may come her way…and downs there are aplenty. In many ways, although on a similar theme and with common elements, the story appeared to be a twist on the classic movie ‘The Exorcist,’ but containing many noticeably clever and significant reversals in roles and general ideas. Happily, all blended wonderfully well and matters just seemed to naturally fall into place to make this a thoroughly good read. Not many laughs, but a truly gripping and rigorous account of life for Ashley, Teresa and Brenda before their trials and tribulations contained within the later ‘Hog Head and Human Parts’ part of Ashley’s difficult and worrisome adventure. Yes, at times hard to read, but a tale involving poor mental health issues with supernatural elements and examples of disturbing human behaviour that should certainly not be missed. Rating: 5.2 dark stars - no doubt, another LB masterpiece - truly excellent!
