I love the classics so this book was perfect on my nightstand. I chose what stories suited me for the moment and, as with anthologies, that's one of the beauties of reading a different story, a different author every week. I especially liked Hauff's Severed Hand and Balzac's Mysterious Mansion. This book is an adventure back in time with the greatest of writers.

One of the best horror story collections I have come across. The classics can not be competed with. Highly recommend!!

GOTHIC READERS BOOK CLUB CHOICE AWARD WINNER Andrew Barger is well-known for his horror anthologies and this is one of the best. He has compiled twelve of the best short stories from the early modern Gothic period. He also includes a wonderful list of the over 300 tales he read for this collection, giving the reader an excellent reference source to continue. If You Like: Dickens, Poe, Balzac http://gothicreadersbookclub.blogspot...

As promised, I will review this book..:) I learned a lot about this genre and could compare writing styles immediately. I especially liked the "also ran" list in the back - but you left out Elizabeth Gaskell? Was she too late for this collection? Thank you for putting these stories together, I LOVED it!

These are some of the best horror shorts I have ever read! Some were quite scary whereas others just made you think. I would hope to find another anthology from this author as I really enjoyed this tome in itself. The characters are rich and well defined, the lead up to each event is explained with spine ripping anxiety. This is just the type of classic horror I love to read! Very well done!

Interesting stories but not terribly scary...except the medical cures, they were scary. I had only read the Poe and Hawthorn before.
