Er greift „einige sonderbare Abfällsel (auf), die so zwischendurch passiert sind.“ Ein solches Abfällsel ist auch „Der Schmied seines Glückes“, von Keller abwechselnd realistisch, ironisierend, parodierend, satirisch und voller Humor geschrieben und von der großen Dame des deutschen Theaters, Maria Becker, ebenso treffend erzählt. The outset of "Der Schmied seines Glückes“ (The Artisan of His Own Fortune) is already filled with irony: A man tries to further his professional luck by anglicizing his name from Johannes to John. The author, Gottfried Keller, created the fictional town of Seldwyla for his stories, and he maintained that he was not as interested in the fate of the town as a whole but rather the seemingly insignificant episodes of the lives of its inhabitants. “Der Schmied seines Glückes” is such an episode, and is read by German theater star Maria Becker. Its satirical humor, and keen sense for parody, are as amusing today as when it was first published. |
