| Augustine of Hippo (354 - 430 AD) was an early Christian theologian and philosopher from North Africa whose writings influenced all of Western Christianity. Augustine's Confessions is one of the most influential works of Latin literature. Written in the last years of the fourth century AD during his early years as a bishop, the work reflects on his life and on the acts of remembering and recounting a life. Part life story and part spiritual biography, the work examines the seminal issues of the human condition: Who we are, and why we are here? Augustine saw the human being as a composite of soul and body, with the soul being superior to the body. This is based on his hierarchical classification of things into those that just exist, those that exist and live, and those that exist, live, and have reason. This is also an account of how Augustine exchanged the worldly things in pursuit of divine knowledge and awareness. |
