Robin Hood vivió en la segunda mitad del siglo XII bajo el reinado de Ricardo Corazón de León. La fatalidad lo hizo jefe de las últimas bandas de sajones armados que, rebeldes a la conquista normanda, vivían independientes en algunos condados de Inglaterra, fuera de la ley del vencedor, por lo que se les llamaba "outlaws" ("fuera de la ley"). Hacia el tiempo en que Ricardo Corazón de León salió de su cautividad, estos rebeldes jóvenes se habían refugiado en el bosque de Sherwood, teatro de sus aventuras. Considerados como bandidos por los normandos, pues les asaltaban los castillos, desvalijaban a los barones y a sus ricas abadías, y sobre todo porque resistían su conquista, eran adorados por los desposeídos, los pobres y los siervos sajones que veían en ellos a sus vengadores y los convertían en héroes. Pero el drama también alcanza a los justos y cuando la felicidad y la paz parecían haber tocado nuestro hombre, surge la desgracia impidiendo un romántico amor.
