"Rumpelstiltskin" is a short German fable written by the Brothers Grimm in 1812.  In the story, a poor miller tells a king that he has a daughter who can spin straw into gold. The greedy king locks the miller's daughter away and threatens to kill her unless she spins three rooms full of straw into gold.
