Emile Verhaeren (21 May 1855 – 27 Nov 1916) was a Belgian French-writing poet, one of the founders of Symbolism. He wrote about his homeland in a very straight and radically honest way, held nothing back. His first play, Les Aubes was written in 1898 and was devoted social injustice. His works were translated in over two dozens of languages. Stefan Zweig translated his works in German. Verhaeren was convinced pacifist, and migrated to England due to World War I. This is a collection of Poems of Emile Verhaeren, perhaps not one of the most notable poets of his time, but definitely one of the most gifted. A true master of French language, a passionate versemonger and a genuine striver for justice – all edges of his personality, his view of the world are given in this poetical gem. |
