Alfred Noyes was an English poet, short-story writer and playwright. He is best known for his ballads, "The Highwayman" and "The Barrel-Organ". He was born in 1880 and grew up in in Wolverhampton, England. His father was a grocer and a teacher and he taught Noyes Latin and Greek. When he was twenty-one he published his first collection of poems, The Loom Years. Alfred Noyes studied in Oxford, where he left before completing his degree.
