| One of three finalists in the 2020 Canadian Book Club Awards Undercover Vancouver police detective Carol Ainsworth is called in to be the acting manager of the Fairmont Empress Hotel as two mob families are booked in for a "quote" wedding. Only Canadian and FBI surveillance intelligence is pointing to them starting a new west coast drug cartel. A hunky guest who already knows who Carol is, turns out to be an FBI agent as Carol soon finds out. He is in the hopes that by seducing her he could get some inside information on the mob. Carol's nephew goes missing and other young boys are being abducted. Enter elderly American psychic, Agnes, bearing a crystal skull, claiming not only did Carol ask her there, but much to Carol's chagrin, claims she can read minds and does. One of the mafia bosses is found hanged in his room, by a ghost. Agnes begins to fill in Carol on the vast ghost history of Victoria and of the fact that the mafia are Satanists. Meanwhile in the sewers of Victoria, where the druggies hang out, ancient trapped spirits are becoming restless and angry. One of the reason Agnes is there, is due to an old curse involving Satanists and First Nations peoples. But the main reason is that she has been hired to solve a decades old abduction of a young boy. The spirit beings in the sewers exist by living off the heightened energy of the druggies. Only something goes wrong and one of the trapped energy beings begins to merge with human DNA and a new being is formed. Carol's seemingly quiet undercover operation goes into overload when one of the mobsters, a hunky Italian, Tony begins falling for her and Jake's former fiancée, a very dominating lady shows up. |
