Publicado pela primeira vez em 30 de junho de 1936 pela editora Macmillan Publishers, o livro foi recebido, em geral, com comentários positivos da crítica, vencendo os prêmios Pulitzer e National Book Award no ano seguinte ao seu lançamento. Foram vendidas cerca de trinta milhões de cópias mundialmente, foi traduzido para mais de trinta idiomas e também se encontra disponível em braille e no formato de áudio. Disposta cronologicamente, a sua história, passada no Sul dos Estados Unidos, retrata a vida de Scarlett O'Hara, filha mimada de um rico dono de plantação algodoeira, que deve usar todos os meios à sua disposição para sobreviver durante a Guerra Civil Americana e, posteriormente, ao período da Reconstrução. Apesar de extensa, a obra é conhecida pela sua clareza e legibilidade, com temas comuns à literatura popular — aventura, guerra, paixão e turbulência social. Mitchell começou a escrevê-lo em 1926 para passar o tempo, enquanto se recuperava de alguns problemas de saúde. O processo de escrita levou quase dez anos, e em 1935, a editora Macmillan adquiriu os direitos de publicação do volume. Entrou rapidamente para as listas de mais vendidos e, pouco depois de seu lançamento, teve os seus direitos de filmagem comprados pelo produtor David O. Selznick. Lançada em 1939, a longa-metragem homónima, interpretada nos papéis principais por Vivien Leigh e Clark Gable, foi um sucesso de público e de crítica.
