most Jews are surprised when I tell them I spend about two-thirds or more of my time at work with non-Jews. To a certain extent, their reaction makes sense. After all, rabbis, even rabbis on university campuses, generally center their professional efforts on Jews, not gentiles. When I try to better understand why people are so astonished, I get the impression that they do not quite get how devoting my time to non-Jews, especially because I am usually not even talking about or doing Jewy things, is "Jewish"; they accept that I enjoy it and that it is part of what I do as a college chaplain, but they have a hard time grasping how my job serves the Jewish people and why I would so intentionally connect with non-Jewish students, faculty and staff. |
