This book includes almost 70 photos taken by Lewis Hine (1874-1940, as he worked as an investigative photographer for the National Child Labor Committee (NCLC), documenting working and living conditions of children in the United States between 1908 and 1924. The NCLC photos are useful for the study of labor, reform movements, children, working class families, education, public health, urban and rural housing conditions, industrial and agricultural sites, and other aspects of urban and rural life in America in the early twentieth century. A 36 minute film titled Deadline for Action (1946) is also included. Produced by the United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America (UE), this film describes how left-leaning labor unions engaged in political activism to combat corporate influence on the U.S. Congress in the years following World War II. Finally, a concise textual summary of the history of child labor and child labor laws in the United States is located at the end of the book. |
