La celebre storia del capriolo che perde la mamma è entrata nell'immaginario culturale dell'Occidente come favola per bambini grazie al successo della trasposizione cinematografica di Walt Disney nel 1942. Ma a ben leggere l'opera dello scrittore ebraico-ungherese Felix Salten, in Bambi non c'è mai stata l'intenzione di rivolgersi a giovanissimi: come scrive nella sua introduzione Massimiliano De Villa "l'infanzia è uno stadio da superare, cui non si desidera fare ritorno, una fase da attraversare sulla via della maturità. Proprio per questo - come recita il sottotitolo - si tratta della Storia di una vita". Bambi è un romanzo di formazione a tratti triste, a tratti spietato, un viaggio attraverso la crudeltà della natura, dove la violenza non viene esercitata solo dai cacciatori, ma anche dalle creature del bosco verso i propri simili. La lotta per la sopravvivenza è la legge che guida tutti gli abitanti del bosco. Ma anche tutti noi. Per recuperare il senso più originale, poetico e profondo di Bambi, questa edizione è stata meravigliosamente illustrata dall'animatore, regista e artista Simone Massi. Il suo tratto denso e drammatico ci accompagna dentro il bosco. Come ci racconta il giornalista Luca Raffaelli nella prefazione, tutte le sue tavole "nascondono un invito a entrare con lo sguardo, a non fermarci sulla superficie. C'è sempre una zoomata che dobbiamo fare noi, per arrivare in fondo, per capire di più". Per scavare, insieme a Bambi, tra le domande e i dubbi che, da sempre, agitano il nostro essere vivi.
