Later known as the First Discourse, or The Discourse on the Sciences and Arts, this was Jean-Jacques Rousseau's winning response to an essay question put forth by the Academy of Dijon in 1750. It is also the text that originally won Rousseau fame and recognition. The question the Academy asks is whether or not the restoration of the arts and sciences tended to purify morals. Rousseau's response was a resounding "no." Later he would submit what is referred to as the Second Discourse, or The Discourse on the Origin of Inequality, and although not a winning response, Rousseau had caused enough of a stir that he was able to have the Second Discourse published on his own.
