John Newton (1725 – 1807) began his career as a depraved sailor involved with the African slave trade. After repenting and coming to faith in Christ, he became an Anglican clergyman, hymnwriter, and abolitionist. His most famous work, of course, is “Amazing Grace”.

But Newton wrote 276 other hymns, including such well-loved classics as “How Sweet the Name of Jesus Sounds,” “Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken,” and “I Asked the Lord That I Might Grow”.

The hymns in this complete collection include poems on Old and New Testament episodes and characters, providence, creation, the seasons, trial and comforts, dedication and surrender, and hymns for public worship.
