Introduction: Some Facts and Figures Every day nurses and other healthcare workers suffer debilitating and often career ending injuries from lifting and moving patients. (1) The healthcare industry has relied on people (mostly women) to do the work of machines. (2) Nursing is considered an occupation of heavy labor and the physical demands of the job is one reason often cited for nurses leaving the profession. (3) In 1998, "healthcare patient" was identified as the source of 59,002 musculosketal disorders (MSDs) with the trunk and back most often affected. (4) In 2002, nationally, healthcare workers had twice the rate of injuries due to over-exertion than construction workers. (5) Eighty-three percent of healthcare workers continue to work in spite of back pain, 60% fear a disabling back injury. (6) |
